The other day I picked up a new mascara from Maybelline, the Magnum Volum' Express Waterproof mascara. I chose the waterproof one because I didn't bring one with me, and the rainy season is almost upon us here in Japan.
I held a pretty neutral attitude towards this product when I first bought it, but the first time I tried it I HATED it. As in, seriously despised it. It felt like there was no filter in the top of the tube that in other mascara's removes the excess product. With this one, it was like I'd dipped the wand in a bowl of the formula and tried to apply it to my lashes. It was awful - I had to use the wand off one of my other mascara's to try and separate my lashes from the huge disgusting clump they'd been turned into. It didn't work. The other problem is the fact that it is a bitch to get off (excuse my French). Seriously, the only stuff that gets it off is my Clinique Take The Day Off cleansing balm.
Now before you go and think this is just a post dedicated to how bad this product is, let me just say this. When you manually scrape excess mascara off the wand, this product is transformed. It separates the lashes beautifully, lengthens them and really does hold a curl. I love the spikey brush it comes with (when it's not buried beneath tons of mascara) as it's fantastic for getting right into the roots of your lashes, and the formula doesn't irritate my sensitive eyes.
All in all, this mascara would be drastically improved by a filter to get rid of the ridiculous amount of mascara on the wand when you open it. If this was present, I think it would become one of my favourite mascaras (still wouldn't beat the almighty Max Factor Masterpiece Max though). The finish it gives to the lashes is similar to the more natural looking false lashes, and what girl doesn't want lashes looking like that?!
